On the Inishowen Peninsula, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way ...
We are looking for Galway at Halloween 2014, and somewhere near Alton Towers ( or Galway or Dublin) during the Easter holidays 2015.
The House
Our home is c. 220 sq. metres, built in 1989. It is deceptively large, with different 13 rooms, including 3 bedrooms, a garage and a summer house. The property sits in a mature garden of 0.3 hectares.
Ground Floor
With two young children, our home is very child-friendly. On the ground floor of our home there are three multi-purpose reception rooms, where every member of the family can find space to do their own thing!
A sun lounge with a patio door opening on to the paved patio and the garden, the kids have now claimed this space as one of their two playrooms and there are loads of boardgames, books, toys and jigsaws here. There is desktop computer here for your use, there is also an X-Box 360 with Kinect.
A large sitting room / dining room at the front of the house, overlooking the front garden, with a large tv and a satellite receiver, we have all the UK SKY channels, movies and sports - somewhere for the adults to escape to!
A separate family room for watching TV and for leisurely breakfasts or casual dining. It also has a lovely wood-burning stove for a warming real fire on a chilly evening. There is an eclectic mix of over 300 books (in English, Irish and French) and 300 CDs here. Don't bother bringing holiday books or cds with you, we are sure you will find something to your taste here!
The fully-equipped kitchen, looks out over our garden, open fields and the surrounding countryside at the back of the house. The kitchen has a breakfast bar for two, for those who don't like to set a full breakfast table in the morning.
The family office is also on this floor, thee are two office desks where you can connect your own electrical devices, laptops, etc. if needed.
Right next to it there is a large family bathroom with bath, shower and bidet. At the back hallway there is another small toilet.
First Floor
Upstairs there are three bedrooms - the master bedroom, with a king size 'memory foam' bed; our son's bedroom, with a double bed; our daughter's bedroom with a single bed, and a playroom which has a small bed, currently used as a sofa. All bedrooms have a private washbasin. There is a second family bathroom with an electric shower on this floor. The master bedroom has a TV and a Nintendo Wii with Wii Fit, Wii Sports and Netflix.
Equipment and Accessories
The electrical equipment in the kitchen includes a large Liebherr fridge-freezer, a De Longhi microwave oven/grill, a Neff dishwasher, an Electrolux oven/grill, a Belling 5-ring gas hob, a food processor, a juicer, a De Longhi coffee machine, a sandwich maker and a toaster. There is a Bosch washing machine and a Zanussi dryer in a small laundry room at the back door.
Home Entertainment / Media
Playstation 4, X-Box 360 with Kinect (X-Box Live enabled), Nintendo Wii, an two hi-fi systems, four televisions, a DVD player/HDD recorder, 2 dvd/video players, a SKY satellite receiver (UK) with all the channels. .
Computer / Internet
There is a home computer for you to use with free unlimited internet access (ADSL) available, with a download speed of between 3-8mb/sec, depending on the time of day. If you want to bring your own laptop, you can connect it to any electrical power socket in the house for a wired internet connection, or we can give you our WIFI password if you prefer.
Garden and Outdoor Facilities
There is a wooden deck with a gas barbecue area at the back of the house, and an outside dining area. There is a children's play area too with swings, a slide, a 3m enclosed trampoline, a wooden summer house and sandpit. The two dogs sleep in the summer house. There are 2 kids bikes and one adult bike. The back garden is large and fully enclosed with a wooden fence, making it safe for young children to play in. The gates at the front of the house can also be closed for extra security if you wish.
Our Neighbourhood
We live just 1km from the sea and 5km from the EU Blue Flag beach of Culdaff - one of the most spectacular and beautiful sandy beaches in Ireland. It has a great children’s playground, and even in the height of the tourist season, you will probably only find a dozen or so people on the beach.
Useful Websites
Our house is on a beautiful peninsula called Inishowen in Co. Donegal at the very top of Ireland. The official tourist website is www.visitinishowen.com We are sure you will find that this wild and beautiful peninsula is the perfect place to chill out from the fast pace of a hectic modern lifestyle.
Inishowen is very scenic and possesses such a range of sights and attractions that it is often referred to as 'Ireland in miniature'. The scenery is really majestic - magnificent mountain ranges, rolling hills and neverending stretches of deserted sandy beaches on the North Atlantic coast.
We think you will love this website www.skyandstone.com we feel that it captures the special magic and beauty of the most beautiful and remote part of Ireland – but then we are biased! The photographs are by local photographer Andy McInroy.
The following site (in French) has some wonderful photos of the area, just scroll down to the bottom of the page. http://www.terresceltes.net/Peninsule-d-Inishowen.html
Our village - Malin
We live just 1km from Malin village, an annual award-winner in the National Tidy Towns competition. Malin village has a laid-back feel to it, situated where the dramatic mountains and rolling hills of Donegal meet the splendid Atlantic Ocean. There are lots of mountain walks close by.
Malin is approximately 10 km from Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point, from where the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland can be seen on a clear day.
Facilities in Malin village include a post office, a supermarket, butcher, hairdresser, beautician, hotel with bar and restaurant( with very good food by a German chef), a diner and take-away which serves homemade pizzas, a cafe, two small traditional pubs - one of which also has a small traditional grocery shop attached and an off licence (i.e. which sells alcohol). It is a very safe neighbourhood, with zero crime. Though we are in a rural area, we have neighbours within 50m.
There is a small town (Carndonagh) 4km away with larger shopping facilities, supermarkets, banks, restaurants, ATMs, Internet cafes, coffee shops, etc.
