London Family House - Close to the city centre
The house is situated in an area called Gospel Oak in the London Borough of Camden. It is just three miles from the West End and City of London with great transport links by bus, tube and overground train.
Our family home was built in the late 1970s as part of Camden's architecturally pioneering social housing scheme. A radical move away from high-rise living led to these modernist houses being designed by young architects called Benson and Forsyth (who have since designed a host of large-scale public buildings, including the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin). The house is innovative in the way it creates space and makes use of natural light.
The house has three bedrooms. On the lower ground floor there are two singles separated by a sliding-door partition, access to a small garden, and a cloakroom. The ground floor is the living area with a kitchen, dining room and living room with a large mono-pitch skylight providing natural light. On the first floor is a double bedroom, bathroom and access to the roof terrace.
The house is a five-minute walk from the 791-acre open space of Hampstead Heath - London's countryside. The heath is beautiful at all times of the year, and its woods and grasslands are a perfect escape from the city. It also offers spectacular views of the city, as well as a children's playground and paddling pool, tennis courts, a summer bandstand, open-air swimming pool, lake swimming and the sumptuous Kenwood House - an 18th century stately home housing a stunning world-class art collection.
A ten-minute walk will bring you to London's famous Camden Market, a vibrant area packed with alternative fashion and design, shops, bars and restaurants, or to the amenities of Kentish Town with its craft beer pubs, supermarkets, coffee shops, and indoor swimming pool and leisure centre. Just slightly further away lies the more sophisticated area of Hampstead with elegant shops and restaurants.
The centre of London is within easy reach by public transport. The local bus routes take you to Trafalgar Square, Oxford Circus or King's Cross in 20 minutes, Kentish Town underground is a 12-minute walk and just two minutes away is Gospel Oak overground station serving a host of locations with trains every 10 minutes. The nearest Boris bikes (public bicycle hire scheme) are in Camden Town.
