Cozy house with great garden in Aarhus, Denmark
We're a family of four living just 10 minutes from downtown Aarhus - a lively and liveable city with lots of history and activities for the whole family. And in 2017, Aarhus will be European Capital of Culture, which means even more interesting stuff to see and do. Aarhus is also a good base for exploring the rest of Jutland, including the beautiful beaches of the North Sea and the lovely countryside of Djursland, central Jutland around Silkeborg, and North Jutland. And farther afield, Copenhagen is just three hours away by train or car. In fact, Aarhus is one of the New York Times' must-see destinations for 2016.

Our comfortable, completely renovated one-story house is approx. 160 m2 and has room for five to six people. We have a beautiful garden with lots of flowers, fruit, vegetables, chickens, and a 12m2 greenhouse with room for tomatoes, herbs and a couch for napping. We live in the attractive suburban neighborhood of Risskov, just two km from a wonderful clean sandy beach (easy biking distance) and five km from the center of Aarhus. Risskov is very quiet, but we are well-supplied with supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants and cafes.
Our house has three large bedrooms (two for teenagers and one for adults), a very large and well-equipped kitchen with a breakfast nook, a living room and a sunny dining room that also has a quiet corner for reading. There is a large bathroom with a bathtub (just renovated) as well as a half-bath next to the parents' bedroom. Of course, we have the basic amenities including wifi, a computer, a TV, an XBox, washer/dryer, and a dishwasher. We also have a friendly female cat, and our four chickens will thank you for taking care of them by laying fresh eggs for your breakfast every day.
Our house looks kind of dark in the photos, but that's just because we took the pictures on a cloudy day in December. It's quite sunny in the summer.
We also have four bicycles. Biking is a great way to get to know the city and very easy and safe here, even downtown (also for children). We usually have nice weather in July with average temperatures around 23-27 degrees and lots of sun.
We've done a lot of exchanges and really enjoy Intervac, and we would be happy to answer any questions about special activites or interests you might have!

We live in Risskov, an attractive residential area ca. 4 km. north of Aarhus. There's a small playground at the end of our street, as well as a large and interesting ‘viking playground' sited on the bank of a newly restored lake about 0.5 km from our house. There are wooded areas and lovely child-friendly public beaches about 1 km from the house, easily accessible by bike. The forest of Risskov is close by - beautiful old beech trees all the way down to the beach.
All of the many good beaches along the bay of Aarhus are open to the public. Our local beach, called Bellevue, is excellent - white sand and shallow water. it's popular with families and teenagers - take a picnic basket and stay all afternoon.
The capital of Jutland and Denmark's second-biggest city, Aarhus is particularly popular with students and young families. The city has a major university, offers a rich cultural life and is linked to all major Danish cities by planes, trains and buses. (http://www.visitaarhus.dk/). A trip to Aarhus has recently been recommended by the New York Times (http://nymag.com/travel/weekends/aarhus/). Aarhus is European Cultural Capital in 2017, with lots of interesting things going on: http://www.aarhus2017.dk/en/
There is a local airport 30 min. north of our house (Tirstrup). There is a larger regional airport located in Billund (see below) with good connections to many European destinations (Ryanair and other carriers). Copenhagen can be easily reached by train (3 hrs) or ferry (3 hrs).
The original and biggest Legoland amusement park (in Billund) is about an hour's drive from our house. (www.legoland.dk). The west coast of Jutland, offering more spectacular beaches, can be reached in ca. two hours.
We've had seven successful Intervac exchanges (Holland, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, 2xNorway) and are looking forward to a new adventure.
